The Hulka clip has jagged jaws (like teeth), which grasp and clip over the Fallopian tube. The gold plated clasp on the Hulka clip can cause reaction in some patients This method has a higher failure rate than the Filshie Clip for both uterine and ectopic pregnancies.
In a study involving Hulka v Filshie Clips it was found that the Filshie Clip was superior in that its larger capacity and atraumatic-locking device made it easier to occlude thicker tubes. The Filshie applicators were also simpler to use and maintain. (Ref. P.J.Toplis).
- High Failure Rate 36.5 per 1000 (CREST data)
- 2 Clips per tube are often used making procedure less cost effective
- Gold plated clasp can cause reaction in some patients
- No tubal manipulation due to sharp teeth
- Sharp teeth cause tubal bleeding
- Does not accommodate large tubes
- Technique difficult to learn
- Instruments less robust
