Closure Checking Gauge
The Closure Checking Gauge is a practical safety device allowing operators to monitor the performance of their Filshie Clip Applicators. It is critical that applicator pressure is sufficient to ensure correct clip closure and complete tubal occlusion. The Closure Checking Gauge is designed for use immediately prior to Filshie Clip female sterilisation procedures providing:
• Extra confidence and reassurance in equipment.
• A quick, simple and easy to use method
• Identification of applicators that may need re-adjustment
• Use with all current Filshie Clip Single Load Applicators*
Step 1: Loading the Gauge
Check that the Filshie Clip Applicator has been correctly assembled (as outlined in the Operating Room Instruction Manual).
Hold the gauge by the flag and gently slide the base into the applicator 'clip tray' (Fig 1). Make sure that it is positioned level in the applicator's lower jaw (within the side guides) and back against the 'clip stop' (Fig 2).
Step 2: Applicator Closure

Close the 'finger bar' (Fig 3) until the applicator jaw just holds onto the base of the gauge (Fig 4).
Check that the gauge is located within the 'side guides' of the applicator top jaw. If not, ease jaw correctly over the gauge.
Figs 5 & 6 show an end view of correct and incorrect positioning of clamped jaw on gauge.
Do not use excessive force. Once the gauge has been held DO NOT squeeze the finger bar any further.
Step 3: Checking the Results
Once clamped, check for lengthways movement only (in the direction of the clip tray and applicator shaft) as shown in Fig 7. Sideways movement of the flag should not be considered.
Gauge Held - OK - Applicator acceptable to use (see caution next page).
Gauge Loose - Unacceptable - If there is movement lengthways then the applicator must not be used. Return to manufacturer (or their appointed agent) for checking and re-adjustment.
If in any doubt - return the applicator.
Caution: The Closure-Checking Gauge only indicates the minimum acceptable closing pressure. It is strongly recommended that applicators are regularly serviced and re-adjusted by the manufacturer or their appointed agent at least once a year or every 100 procedures
*Do not use with models: FC-2. FC-4, FC-6. FC-10 and one piece Minilap applicators serial numbers 1 to 285.
